The process of reducing a body to cremated remains. A service can happen before, after, or separately from cremation.
There’s no perfect way through this.
There is a clearer one.

Funeral industry, explained
There isn’t one “right” kind of funeral home.
Some families want a close relationship with a small, local team. Others value the facilities, availability, or range of locations a larger organization may offer. What matters is knowing what to ask and choosing the provider that fits your needs.
Often a more personal, flexible experience with local ownership.
Who will be my primary contact? Which services do you provide directly?
May offer broader facilities, more locations, and deeper staffing.
Who owns this location? What choices are optional, and what is included?
Often a simple route for families who do not need a full service at the funeral home.
Where will care and cremation take place? What fees are included in the estimate?
Can coordinate a burial space and related arrangements in one place.
Can services or merchandise be purchased separately? What is the total cost?
You are entitled to clear, itemized prices—not just a package quote.
Ask which fees are required, which are optional, and which costs come from other providers.
When a death has just occurred
The first call. Then the next step.
The right starting point depends on where and how the death occurred. Begin with immediate care, then arrangements.

If the Medical Examiner is involved, your chosen funeral director coordinates release. Death certificates are handled separately through the provider or the appropriate records office; Pasadena and Long Beach have separate local processes.
Release, records, and official county links →- 01Emergency or unexpected apparent death?
Call 911. Describe the situation and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not wait to choose a funeral provider.
- 02Expected death under hospice care?
Call the hospice team using the number in the care plan. In a hospital or care facility, speak with the responsible staff member.
- 03Find wishes and confirm authority.
Locate existing instructions or prepaid arrangements. Ask the provider who has legal authority to authorize care and arrangements.
- 04Ask about transfer and costs.
Once immediate care is handled, ask what you are authorizing, who coordinates release, and what is included in the written estimate.
Funeral terms, plainly explained
Words you shouldn’t have to learn under pressure.
Cremation without a viewing or formal service at the funeral home. Families may hold a memorial later.
A method of temporary preservation. It is not required in every situation, so it is reasonable to ask when and why it is recommended.
An itemized list of a funeral provider’s goods and services. It is the clearest starting point for a fair comparison.
A lower-impact burial approach that may use biodegradable materials and avoid a vault, subject to cemetery rules.
A personalized gathering to remember someone. It can be religious, secular, formal, casual, immediate, or held later.
Green & natural choices
Natural options deserve clear explanations, too.
“Green” can mean different things. The most helpful question is not whether an option is perfect—it is which choices best reflect the person’s values, traditions, and budget.
Compare providers with these questions →Body care
Ask about refrigeration, non-toxic preparation, and how the provider approaches family involvement.
Container choices
Ask about shrouds, biodegradable caskets, rental caskets, or an urn that suits the family’s plans.
Final resting place
Ask a cemetery or provider about its rules for natural burial, scattering, or other memorial choices.
